Appropriate Behavior Expectations Case Study ECE 201 Professor: Sandra Harley April 18, 2012 Working with children is a very rewarding job, however it is challenging as well. There are many expectations that are appropriate behavior in the classroom and as teachers we can hope that these behaviors be carried out when the child is outside of school as well. Establishing norms and expectations in a classroom is a very complex, and long term task. What is an effective classroom? Well in my opinion each person will have his or her own opinion about that answer.
By allowing certain behaviors to occur without consequences the teacher is sending the message that it is okay. This can cause the students to lose focus and a decrease in understanding of the lesson being taught. It can also allow chaos to reign supreme. Disruptions can also make other students feel threatened. Students must feel safe and secure in their class in order to learn and grow in education.
In a school there are many other people to consider as your team rather than just the people you work with closely on a daily basis. Knowing and executing your role as an individual to the best of your ability allows you to be a valued member of any team. It is also essential to know the roles of those around you. This allows you to fully understand and support each other. By working as a team you can gain valuable knowledge from those who are more experienced than you, but it also allows you to suggest newer and fresher ways to approach learning.
Encouraging and establishing student self-control through a process of promoting positive student achievement and behavior is what every classroom needs. Classroom rules and procedures should be established with students the first week of school. Each student should have full understanding and be aware of what is expected of him/her. Providing a safe learning environment where students can participant is a key factor in classroom management. A student needs to feel comfortable with themselves, others, and the teacher, so there can be meaningful discussion and interactions.
Physical Resources such as classrooms are important in improving the overall performance because the tables allow the students to learn about the subject that they are taking within certain years of the school. Building a bank of “what if” scenarios is a valuable tool in building a solid teaching philosophy. * Discussing teaching cases allows teachers to reflect and think critically about a certain problem without actually having to go through the experience. Helping teachers prepare for possible situations that may arise in the classroom, is a huge benefit to teachers. Knowing ahead of time how to respond to a certain situation helps build confidence and reduces anxiety in the decision making process. There would be far fewer discipline problems and behaviors requiring corrections and discipline if the student’s basic needs are being met within the classroom. Particularly with more challenging students, it is helpful to find what the student is getting from the misbehaving, that is, which goals or functions are being met when misbehaving and help the student meet their for appropriate rather than inappropriate behaviors. These are the students that need attention and interventions. To get in touch with and educate these students effectively educators need to be trained in appropriate instructional and structured strategies in order to implement modifications and accommodations for these students. The teacher may have genuinely been concerned with presenting too much information to students but through my classes at Sage, excessive stimuli is good of students with ADD because it gives them many things to focus on instead of causing behavioral problems.
