Effective Communication is important with pupils because it maintains a good relationship between the Teaching and the pupil when developing these positive relationships. Children want to be in an honest and trustworthy environment. If they don’t feel that they can trust you they will find it hard to approach you and this could affect the child’s learning. Having a positive relationship will allow the child to feel more comfortable around the T/A which will inevitably create a good learning atmosphere for everyone. Consistency and Patience will help you build this relationship.

Being a teaching assistant ,you have to model yourself in a best possible way to communicate with children as they learn and absorb your methods of communication. In order to develop and maintain positive relationships with children ,I have to communicate politely and clearly so that they can understand me. By using simple vocabulary and positive body language I can get their attention more easily and my friendly approach would make me trustworthy for them and they can discuss their problems or share their ideas with me. For example,in my placement,my friendly and polite attitude towards reception children makes it easy for them to bring their complaints to me;if they are hurt or hit by somebody.

Other essential aspects to be considered include the following: Showing respect and taking the time to listen, making sure of clarity on key points, showing consideration for others and remembering personal issues, finally being effective in your communication and retaining a good sense of humour.

To ensure effective teamwork and continual care of the children we must communicate well by keeping each other informed and aware of current situations going on around us. Communication involves Verbal (talking) and Non Verbal (non talking) communication. To be able to communicate effectively you need to try and consider their point of view and be very clear on what you are talking about and make sure the other person understands what you are talking about. The benefits I will have of effective communication in my work role will be my relationship with the children and their parents and the relationship with my work colleagues. With children you need to get down to their level to speak to them and make eye contact.
