Some children may ‘play up’ in response to the stress of the life change. They may regress and develop less mature behaviour such as being unable to dress themselves or use the toilet. School age children tend to adjust to a new baby easier than younger children do. However, they may worry about where they will fit in when the new baby arrives. They may feel jealous of the attention the new baby is getting.
They can quickly fall behind from peers of the same age. They may find it difficult to interact and make friends with others who are more advanced. They may struggle with intellectual development memory and concentration. Delayed speech development A child who has limited or no speech could be a cause great concern. This could also make them very anxious as it is a new environment for them. They may not know anyone in their new school/college. They could also feel really happy about it as it also gives them the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Another common transition experienced by children and young people is moving up through the school years. This could make the child feel anxious and apprehensive about meeting their new teacher, if they are in high school they may also be feeling anxious and worried about their new timetable and getting used to it.
They may be sad because they are leaving their friends and familiar security of their previous school. They may experience a sense of loss and even bereavement about losing their friends. The child’s behaviour may change; they may become withdrawn or display extroverted behaviour Puberty is another transition that all children will experience. The way a child behaves is entirely due to hormones. Puberty is a time of great change.
Children with learning difficulties will need extra support with certain areas of development and may develop a low self-esteem because they get annoyed with themselves for not being able to do something, such as a simple numeracy problem, or read a book. If a child has sensory impairment, a hearing problem this would influence their development, it could affect their speech and communication and may make them feel they are unable to join in with
Children’s belief may cause them emotional conflict when they want to participate in some physical activities which go against their family’s wishes or religious beliefs. Having a new step-family is a big change for some children, this may affect their emotional development, as they may feel as if there mother/father is replacing each other.Coming from a low income family may a significant effect on a child’s development. Children who came from deprived backgrounds are less likely to thrive and achieve well in a school. Family may not be able to afford to pay for extra activities such as swimming lessons or dance lessons, this could an affect child’s physical development.Having numerous siblings can have an impact on children development. Children may feel frustrated with lack of attention.
Other disadvantages from this situation can be that sometimes a single parent can’t afford expensive holidays which would make the child feel left out when they are talking about events when after coming back from their holidays and are asked to write or tell about what happened during the school holidays. The child will lose their self confidence and moral will be low if all the factors above do occur, they may also get jealous of other children who could be in a better situation because of the financial stability brought by having both the parents being together. Example 2: Children moving form Reception to Juniors most parents and children get worried about how they will fit into new environments, with children older then their own, not knowing how and what is required of them to which can cause both parent and child to feel insecure by not sleeping well and having nightmares, not eating food, and as the time gets closer the child will start to be more clingy towards the parent and vice versa for the parent

2.2 Any form of prejudice and discrimination can have a severe negative effect throughout a person’s life. Being undervalued by peers can make a person feel isolated and lonely. A child’s confidence and self esteem will become less and less the more they are discriminated against. They will start not wanting to be involved in activities, stop putting their hand up to ask questions. This in turn will affect their learning and ability to interact.
The child’s lack of adequate socialization with peers may contribute to identity confusion. The adolescent being to notice that they are not like their friends. and this alone can cause a great deal of distress. Teenagers want to fit into a group and Crohn’s disease constantly pulls them away from their peers and deprives them of a sense of belonging. Teens may be self-conscious of their delayed puberty a complication of Crohn’s disease.
