Persuasive Researched Essay Assignment Samantha Landers Communication Essentials-34(COMM1016-13W-20915) Professor Robin Parkes Monday, April 01, 2013 Research Essay The popularity of tanning salons around the world continue to grow, despite overwhelming evidence linking the use of tanning beds to very serious illnesses, including deadly skin cancers. One would think given the choice between the possibility of dying or looking good would be a no brainer decision, yet when people are given the opportunity to exercise their freedom of choice; people choose vanity over death time and time again. It is this inability or unwillingness to make the right choice to protect themselves or loved ones from the dangers of tanning beds, that forces the government and health officials to take the next step. The urgency for a total ban on the use of tanning beds is obvious; tanning beds are a hazard to public health, public safety and awareness surrounding the use of tanning beds are at risk given the difficulty involved with the enforcement of existing regulations and bans and lastly, although the choice to use tanning beds maybe individual the consequences of these choices impact all of society. The dangers and risks associated with the use of tanning beds far outweigh the benefits, which reinforce the need for a total ban of tanning beds. In July 2009, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer moved tanning beds into its highest cancer risk category and called them “carcinogenic to humans” (Owen, 2010). This statement clearly identifies just how harmful tanning beds are. Melanoma is the most threatening form of skin cancer and has been directly linked to the use of tanning beds.
