The Effects of Indoor Tanning The use of tanning beds can be very harmful to a person’s skin. Many people who have started using tanning beds in their teens are now being diagnosed with skin disorders and some are even dying. When using a tanning bed, people are exposed to UV-A and UV-B rays. This exposure can lead to many problems. Tanning beds have been linked to a number of skin disorders, premature aging of skin, and eye disease. It seems like everywhere you go there are positive images of tanning. Television shows and commercials use tan models and being tan is considered beautiful. It is hard to understand the risks of tanning when you don’t see the damage until it is too late. Tanning beds may be thought of as a quick and easy way to look better, but in reality, the damage being done to your skin can never be reversed. One of the biggest risks of tanning beds is skin cancer. According to Fisher & James (2010), “The incidence of melanoma is increasing more rapidly than that of any other cancer. From 1992 through 2004, there was a particularly alarming trend in new melanoma diagnoses among girls and women between the age of 15 and 39” (p. 901). Over the years, as the hours for indoor tanning increases, so has the risk for melanoma. According to Glick (2007), “The potential development of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers is the most serious of the side effects and may be related to DNA alterations demonstrated to occur from indoor tanning” (p. 4). Another form of cancer that is on the rise is Basal Cell Carcinoma. BCC affects the outer layer of skin and can be treated if detected early. Premature aging is also linked to indoor tanning.
