-Initially the problem was supposed to be the under-performance of vendors who didn’t commit themselves to the process. The problem was supposed to be the order fulfilling rate of Foster but later on it was revealed that Avion was the root cause of problems. The Materials department had given Foster orders for only 2500 units and the lead time was supposed to be 14 days. But later on, as seen in the case, the Production Department needed the supply in 10 days. Moreover, the Marketing Department had to cater to a demand of 4000 whereas the order was for 2500 only.
Muhammad Qureshi Jeff Nowakowski Phase II: Southwest Current Assets: Accounts Receivables a. Analyzing Receivables: There is limited information about the bad debt expense or the allowance for doubtful accounts on Southwest’s 10k. According to the 10k, accounts receivables are carried at cost and the allowance for doubtful accounts was immaterial so the company did not provide figures for the account. The largest source of accounts receivable for Southwest is credit cards companies. These receivables are associated with ticket sales for future travel and amounts from business partners involved in firm’s frequent flyer programs. The fact that Southwest was not required to disclose actual figures on their allowance for doubtful accounts and bad debt expense because of their immateriality indicates that the company does very well with collecting their receivables.
Multinational enterprises like Alcan are often built from the joining of diverse enterprises, each operating as its own entity. The business of acquisition depends on deriving value or profits from each entity, so instituting change is left to others after the mergers and acquisitions people move on to the next target. The IT function was ignored, with responses to new legislation (such as Sarbanes-Oxley in the United States) seemingly the only impetus for change. Alcan management had ignored the importance of an IT strategy, as evidenced by the Corporate IT Director position being vacant for almost a year when this case study started. The current structure is functional, and does provide Alcan management with information, so there are positives to start with.
In the 70’s ethics was not on the forefront of business executives minds, especially when making decisions that could deeply affect the company. This landmark case allows future generations to use a utilitarian analysis to decide whether Ford should have made a different choice. In 1971, Ford Motor Company produced a compact car to the public in record time and at record prices. The quick production time of the Ford Pinto was a result of Ford attempting to keep up with the competition. However, as a result, the Pinto did not undergo all necessary safety tests before it was released.

This is another example of how businesses will follow up with the decisions and use critical thinking to try and foresee any issues that may arise. While optimism tends to sugarcoat problems and critical details are glanced over, pessimism brings out those issues but could be to downbeat and make it seem as there is not a solution to a problem. Realism would be the neutral, more scientific objective. A company has decided that it wants to build two new stores in six months. If thinking pessimistically about it, the stores would probably never get built because the issues would be so abundant that the plans would never be finalized.
