Have you been guilty of talking on a cell phone while driving? I admit that I have committed this act a number of times. So? There has been much speculation that talking on a cell phone while driving impairs your driving ability. Researchers propose to find the correlation between cell phones and impaired driving ability by designing an experiment using participants and a control to test this hypothesis. There are a number of things that need to be done in order to test the hypothesis of driving while talking on a cell phone. For reliable results, the representation of participants must include both men and women, a variety of age groups and races, reduction in the number of distractions, and participants must be subject to the same rules and conditions. Let's explore the importance of the control as well as the participants and how they are important in the development of such experiment in order to test out our hypothesis. First, the experiment must have a control. The control's purpose as applied to this experiment, is to simply drive without talking on a cell phone. By having a control, the results are more valid. In this case, the researchers must be sure to reduce the amount of distractions that can affect the reliability of the overall results. How is this possible? The experiment must be conducted in a closed setting, where researchers have more control of distractions that could potentially affect the outcome. Such distractions include music, passengers and other cars. These distractions must be eliminated. For example: As a participant of this experiment, Lucy is engaged in conversation on her cell phone while driving. She is also listening to music and maneuvering amongst the other drivers. Without warning she gets in a car accident. Which one of the distractions caused the accident? How can we be sure that talking on the cell phone was the soul factor
