What is the history, design, and purpose of the Taj Mahal? How is it a architectural wonder of the world? The Taj Mahal, also known as the “crown of palaces” is a huge white building located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is made of marble and resembles Muslim art in India. It is a very beautiful and detailed building, which was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. He began to build it in 1632 after his wife suddenly died after giving birth to their fourteenth child. Her complicated death left the emperor broken hearted. His love for her was the inspiration. It wasn’t completed until 1648 and the buildings surrounding it five years following. Emperor Shah Jahan explained the Taj Mahal in these words, “Should guilty seek asylum here, Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin. Should a sinner make his way to this mansion, All his past sins are to be washed away. The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs; And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes. In this world this edifice has been made; To display thereby the creator's glory.” This was a way for him to remember his wife as well as create a new start, washing away his past sins. He promised her he would build the most beautiful mausoleum that he has ever seen before as she was dying. After he grieved for two years he became obsessed with art and architecture and focused on building the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal has both Indian and Persian architectural styles. The center of the Taj Mahal is the tomb, which is a form art from the Persian origin. The tomb is 115 ft. An onion shaped dome covers it, and it has an arched shaped door way.
