If not properly taken care of it can create many problems. Bacteria build up and lack of fluids are some of the main reason why the urinary system can fail or not function correctly. The kidney process about 200 quarts of blood and sifts out about 2 quarts of waste and extra water daily. The kidneys function is to filter old blood and remove waste from the body. It requires a lot of water to keep it functioning. When the kidneys start to shut down it affects other parts of the body and it can cause a chain reaction. A common infection of the urinary system is called a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). It is caused by bacteria in the urinary tract. Women are more prone to getting them than men. Some people get UTIs from being sexually active. Although it is not sexually transmitted peoples bodies react differently to the transference of bacteria from one person to another. It can also be caused because the rectum and the vagina are in close proximity; the bacteria from the rectum can sometime get in the vagina. For women it causes pain in the pelvic area and for the men it causes pain in the rectum. Some symptoms are small amount of frequent urination, pink or cola colored urine, strong smell, and pelvic pain. Antibiotics and plenty of water can treat a UTI. The sudden loss of the ability of the kidneys to remove waste and concentrate urine without losing electrolytes is called Acute Sudden Kidney Failure. When the kidneys are not able to filter the waste it causes toxins to build up. It is very dangerous and can make someone very ill. Bloody stool, breath odor, change in mental status or mood, metallic taste in the mouth, edema of the legs, ankle, and foot are a few of the symptoms for kidney failure.
