Yellow, or gold, is an archetype that in a room is commonly the first color to be noticed. The gold around the red letter draws the attention of the public towards her scarlet letter, thus drawing attention to her sins. This shows her truth cannot be kept a secret. Lastly, as the novel is coming to a close, the narrator is describing the burial place and headstone of Hester Prynne. He describes that upon the tombstone, there appears to be a coat of arms that has inscribed on it, “On a field, sable, the letter A, gules.” Red is used to represent sin or passion.
Furthermore, winter is one of the foremost reasons of Ethan’s present circumstances. Winter has devastated Ethan. He changes from a healthy, hopeful youth, with dreams and ambitions, to a crippled and miserable old man. “He’s been in Starkfield too many winters” ( Wharton 13). Starkfield’s winters are capable of trapping its citizens because of their ability to emotionally burden individuals to the point that they lose their dreams in their struggle to survive.
Some allusions, however, were harmful to the plot or to the reader, most often by confusing the reader if they did not know the context of the original quotation. These allusions can be better understood if they are examined more closely. The literary allusions in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 essentially can be broken down into two categories: those that helped or those that hurt the reader’s understanding of the novel. There were a number of literary allusions in Fahrenheit 451 that helped the reader’s understanding of the novel. Some of the literary allusions that helped the reader’s understanding of the novel added depth to the characters, provided relatable experiences to the reader, and referenced familiar stories.
In the white landscape of Starkfield, red stands out, and she also stands out in Ethan’s life as well. Red is also the color of sin, the trademark color of the devil especially in New England. During this time the Puritan adulterers had to wear red and they did not believe in having more than one wife or loving more than one person. Mattie wearing red all the time symbolized her role as Ethan’s mistress, which was not believed in during this time. Another theme in this novel was the red pickle dish that belonged to Zeena.
He uses symbolism when she is first introduced; “Both men glanced up, for the rectangle of light was cut off.” The reference to the light can suggest that she cuts off the light because she is a negative character, and/or she takes away anything, which is good. The description of Curley’s wife starts with “a girl” that suggests that she appears looking sweet and innocent, childlike even. During the description, the colour red is repeated several times, “rouged lips”, ”her fingernails were red”, “red mules” and “red ostrich feathers”. This is a key thing because usually the colour red means; love, danger, blood, prostitutes – red light district, and passion. Red is also a primary colour in which young children are attracted to, this could explain why Lennie likes her so much; he has a childlike manner.
This symbol develops isolation because of the cold and freezing temperatures, which separates the Fromes from society. Not only do the cold temperatures contribute towards isolation, but so does the snowy weather. The snow makes for difficult travel and trade, which is a reason why the Fromes are in such a tight spot with money. "Guess he's been in Starkfield too many winters. "(Intro) This quote takes place in the introduction and helps to identify the season of winter being trouble.
