Analysis: Los Angeles Lakers Organization History: The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team that plays in the NBA, National Basketball Association. “The Lakers franchise predates the NBA. The Minneapolis Lakers’, from Minnesota “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”, first season was in 1947- 48, when the team entered the National Basketball League. The NBA was formed in 1949 -50 and The Lakers won the very first NBA Champs versus the Syracuse Nationals” (History of The Lakers, 2012). 1951-53 The Lakers won their first back to back championship, making them the first dynasty and the beginning of a legendary NBA franchise. ”In 1960-61 after 13 years in the Land of 10,000 lakes, the Lakers moved to Los Angeles, becoming the first NBA team on the West Coast. Despite no lakes anywhere in site the team decides to retain their old nickname” (Fleming, 2012). Fast forward to present day and 16 NBA championships later, The Los Angeles Lakers are the NBA’s most valuable franchise, beating out the New York Knicks (Badenhausen, 2012). What adds to this accolade is that in the present season of 2012-13, the Lakers have kick started the season with a multibillion dollar Time Warner Cable television deal (Badenhausen, 2012). In addition, Kobe Bryant and The Los Angeles Lakers are “most popular” amongst NBA fans in the world (Ozanian, 2010). Organizational Strengths and Weaknesses: A. Huge access to resources.
