In this report, I am going to analyse the process of becoming a Lawyer/Solicitor and also talk about the roles and responsibilities of a Lawyer. I chose to research law because this was a subject that I did not thoroughly understand but always wanted to study but unfortunately never had the opportunity. Law preserve the power structures of society, it also provides solutions to social problems and promote particular political ideologies according to Braye and Preston-Shoot (1997). The word Lawyer comes from the word law, which can be defined as a system of rules that guide and direct our activities on a day-to-day basis according to Holland and Webb, 1996. What is a lawyer? A Lawyer is someone who successfully passed Law school and is able to give people legal advice and services. In the United States of America, the term Lawyer can be defined as anyone who deals with all stages of the law, whereas countries such as New Zealand, United Kingdom and other parts of the world use the term Solicitor which can also defined as someone who is qualified to provide legal advice and legal services. Types of Lawyers There are a great number of lawyers who specialise in particular areas of the law. An assault lawyer is one of the most common type of lawyers. An assault lawyer usually defends the person who is being convicted of assault. Another popular type of Lawyer is a Divorce Lawyer, this type of lawyer deals with married couples who want to file for divorce and helps them keep up-to-date with legal procedures such as paternity, childcare and asset distribution (Different Types of Lawyer's For You, 2011) Steps of becoming a Lawyer (UK) On the evening of March 28th 2012, I engaged in a conversation with a highly experience Solicitor.
