Sustainable Development of rural environment vs Mitigation of potential climate change Introduction The idea of sustainable development of rural environment stems from the concept of sustainable society and how the society manages its resources whether renewable or non-renewable. First, coined in the World Conservations Strategy by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 1980, this concept was adopted by the World Commission of Environment and Development and sustainability was propelled into a number of social discourses. Sustainable Development can be loosely defined as the development which fulfills the requirements of present social structure without having any ill impact on the needs of the future generation. A particularly integral element of the sustainable development policies is that of Climate change mitigation (Adger, W.N., N. Brooks, M. Kelly, S. Bentham, S. Eriksen (eds.), 2004). Any decision on development which does not consider the climate related policies may have profound impacts on the environment in the long run by the means of emissions. Climate change mitigation policies emphasize on the work that both developed and developing countries need to do in order to put a constraint on the emissions making it particularly relevant in the cases of rural areas considering the relationship between economic development and climate change.The progress which is made in the development works needs to be measured in terms of its impacts at various dimensions of sustainable development employing a number of indicators which are of particular importance in the context of climate change in setting in monitoring the progress made in climate change related development (Agrawala, S., A.
