Homework – Week 1 Unit 01 – Child and young person development (1.1) Explain the difference between sequence of development and rate of development and why the difference is important (1.1) Sequence of development and rate of development are both linked together but in separate ways. The sequence of development is the order in which a child develops, for example, a child of 0-2 years would begin to roll over, crawl, stand and start to walk unaided. However sometimes a child may miss out a section of the sequence, for example, a child of 0-2 years may sit, stand, walk and run missing out rolling over and crawling completely. However the child is still following a sequence of development be-it a different style of sequence. The rate of development is the time frame in which the child should achieve the difference development mile stones, for example, a child of 3 years old should be able to walk up and down stairs unaided, use a fork and spoon and refer to themselves a “I”. However even though the sequence of development for that specific age group should remain the same for all children the rate of the developmental sequence can be affected, for example, a child could have a disability or learning difficulties, health and nutrition problems, growth could be affected and their social situation could be affected. It is important to remember the differences between the sequence and rate of development even though they are linked. No two children are the same, even siblings. One child could be above the average stages of development whilst the other below and need extra attention given to their needs. Complete the following chart providing at least 2 examples of each type of development for each stage. (1.2) STAGE | PHYSICAL | INTELLECTUAL (Cognitive and Communication) | EMOTIONAL (Social and Behavioural) | YEAR |
