Summary Paragraph The research portion is the most important part of any engineering project. Research is needed to get the best information for the design and structure of a chair. This helped us determine which type of structure or design was best fitted for an average person and which design of a chair was most popular. The research portion of the cardboard chair project was to get all the details of the average measurements and basic sketches for the chair. At first I found pictures of some decent looking chairs and get the average dimensions of a chair. I chose to use the features of a 4 leg chair and no arm rest. The arm rest idea was not a good idea because it required extra tubing which is not allowed. The 4 legs and a square base were incorporated because of it will allow strength and hold a 200lb. person. Three basic profile sketches were made to give me a basic profile to work off of once I have started creating the chair. I took measurements of each person in the class to find an average for the height, width, and depth. The measurements I took are popliteal length, buttock popliteal length, back height, and shoulder length. Once I start building my chair, I can make the chair height, back height, and width according to the average measurements taken. The popliteal is the length from the ground to a person’s knee. The buttock length is from the knee to the buttock. The back height is what it says. The shoulder length is also what is says. I used the average popliteal length of 22.75 in. I also used the average buttock popliteal length of 22.5 in. I used the average back height of 22.78 in. For the shoulders, I used the average of 16.375 in. So for the height of the chair I will have a length of 23 in. The seat length will be about 23 in. The back support will also be 23 in. But the shoulder length will be about 18 in, allowing some room for
