“The Law of Life” is a story about a man, Koskoosh, who is left behind by his tribe to die. Koskoosh is a very old man who has lost most of his vision and depends on his hearing. His son, the current chief of the tribe, leaves him some sticks to feed the fire. When the fire dies, so will he. As time goes on he reminisces of the time he left his father in the snow.
Rip Van Winkle was known to be the man who slept for 20 years. Rip’s sleep caused him to miss the Revolutionary War and America’s transition from colony to nation. When he awakens he finds out that everything and everyone has changed. During his 20 year sleep Rip misses events such as the Revolutionary War in which some of his friends fought and died for. Rip also missed out on America’s transition from colony to nation, so that when he enters the village and yells “I am a poor quiet man, a native of the place, and a loyal subject of the King, God bless him!” (2317).
A knight must be brave and courageous. Sir Gawain’s courage was most evident when he accepted the challenge of the Green Knight. At first, he is a good strong leader, a figure of authority, but as the novel goes on, and his character begins to disintegrate. After going over the top, Stephen is left laying in the shellhole with a damaged leg; Weir attends to him when darkness falls.
