Summary on A New Crop of School Gardens In the article A New Crop of School Gardens. Krista Simmons tried to give a brief introduction to the present conditions and futures of the school gardens in many places in America. In the article, he gave descriptions about the gardens as well as pointing out their importance to child development. The article was composed of three main parts. First part was introductions. In this part, he gave detailed descriptions of working conditions of children in the garden. Then he mentioned several other examples of school gardens to explain that school gardens like this were not very rare. However, many school gardens were closed due to lack of money. The few school gardens operating at present were mainly funding by parents and communities. To ensure the survival of the school gardens, more efforts should be made and federal policy should be implemented. The second part was named as "A Teaching Garden". The author told readers how children learnt from the gardens. They learnt a lot more than garden labor but an integration of much knowledge. Working in the garden would also raise children's awareness about what healthy food was. This was of vital importance to solve the problem of early obesity. "Friends of the Earth" was the last part. The author mentioned that joint efforts were made to help school gardens pass the tough times. The garden did play an important role in developing an integral person. Children would need a lot more than knowledge classrooms. Skills from practice should be taught as well. According to Melissa Patrick, who is heading the Saturn project, these are skills that kids used to learn at home were not a reality nowadays. As a result, school gardens could be complementary.
