Matthew Williams September 25, 2013 131 Geography In the past China was wetter and warmer than it is now today. Over the past thousands of years the country’s environment has been highly devastated by major deforestation by the locals. This massive deforestation has been around since 7th century B.C, where locals of the Loess Plateau practiced heavy deforestation. With this, soil erosion has become rapid and has led to massive widespread floods all across the Loess Plateau. These floods are still a concern in today’s times, and with the Yellow River, these floods are above average due to its size. These floods sweep hundreds of millions of tons of topsoil down the river which causes massive soil degradation. The Chinese government has implemented a strategy to divert water from the south of the country to the north. This project alone is the biggest water diversion plan in history. This plan however will be expensive, and also cause the resettling of thousands of peasants. China has already invested in numerous Dam projects all over the rivers of China, for example The Three Gorges Dam. There has also been others, such as the Sanmen Xia Dam, but this project caused the river to become worse over time and causing horrible effects on people’s lives and agriculture. There hasn’t been much success with any of the water projects implemented. Almost all are dam related projects and each have failed and caused many floods and loss of lives.
