When Tom was accused of rape, this was the most racist point in the book to me. The people of Maycomb automatically labeled him as guilty. If I were in his position I would have wanted to fight back. Atticus Finch, a local lawyer and one of the main characters, is appointed as Tom’s lawyer. He is almost completely shunned from the town because he is trying to help a black man accused of rape.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a book about Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer as well as the father of Scout and Jem Finch. Atticus is a lawyer during the Depression era who is defending a black man named Tom Robinson who is being faced with a rape charge. In this book, there is racial and offensive use of language. Due to the use of racial language in the book, school boards have decided to ban it. The school board has every right to ban this particular book from being used in any schools.
The issue was that The Boy Scouts of America were known for raising “men” and asserts that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with those values. The scouts also prohibited any homosexual to be a troop leader. Dale who was a leader was a homosexual himself, and also a gay rights activist. It was known that he acted homosexually towards the boys and also had many boys join in being a gay rights activist. When The Boy Scouts of America caught hear of this, it was immediately taken to court.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird the rape trail of Tom Robinson vs Mayella Ewell, an African American man accused of raping a white teenage girl was held in a bias court room of Maycomb County. Tom Robinson was proven innocent but the end verdict did not match the proof, because no jury would chose to listen to a black man over a white girl due to the state of prejudice Maycomb was under. Racism this town got to the point where when Atticus Finch, a white lawyer chose to represent Tom in the case he was a disgrace and an outcast to the white community. Not only Atticus but his children all suffered from the judgement they were receiving from the whole community for Atticus representing an innocent man. Since children were exposed to this behavior the racism has been passed down to generation to generation.
Peer pressure- When Jarrod was torn between telling the police of what he knows about Tracy’s death or to keep his mouth shut in the name of ‘mate-ship’. Sexual assault- In the event when Tracy was being raped by three boys and Ricko was forcing Tracy to have sex with him before doing her a favour. Alcohol abuse- Where Ricko’s welcome party was filled with alcohol and teenagers as they were drinking an overload amount of alcohol. 1. After Tracy’s death when she was subject of name calling, it was not warranted as she had done nothing wrong to deserve being named as of the event where the three boys had raped her, she had done nothing wrong as she was just weakly trying to fend for herself.
MSM blood donor controversy Amid the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the early 1980s, the FDA banned blood donations from men who'd had sex with another man after 1977. The policy remains in effect to this day. Gay rights advocates protested the ban as both unfair and unwise, an ethical problem, and a discrimination controversy. The men who have sex with men (MSM) blood donor controversy is a dispute over prohibitions on donations of blood or tissue for transplantation. MSM is a classification of men who engage (or have engaged in the past) in sex with other men, regardless of whether they identify themselves as homosexual, bisexual or heterosexual.
So when the Black Power movement decided to start using violent protests like gun shootouts against the police for example ‘the battle of 28th Street’ where eight Black Panthers ambushed a group of police officers and began a shootout. There was a huge contrast with what the NAACP, SNCC and Core had done. Another point that hindered the Black civil rights in the 1960’s was that Black Power movement had grown so popular that in the year 1966 the SNCC expelled all white members and by 1968 CORE had also expelled all white members as they thought only blacks should help each other against the fight for Black civil rights as the whites weren’t letting them have it and soon after that blacks started calling whites ‘honky’. This however made whites who helped them previously feel betrayed after all they did to try and help for example when a few whites helped out with the Freedom Rides campaign in which all those who participated where beaten and some killed. They also had to
Throughout society’s existence, members of the LGBT community have battled oppression, faced intolerance, and dealt with immense prejudice, yet were forced to remain silent. However, a new era was marked by a chain of uprisings commonly known as the ‘Stonewall Riots’. These were a series of violent confrontations between police and gay rights activists in New York City. In response to the second raid in a week by police on the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village that had been selling liquor without a license, about 1,000 transvestites, gays, and lesbians fought back against police by shouting, throwing debris, and refusing to exit the premises. The police officers responded mercilessly with violence, and many of the rioters were brutally beaten and injured.
SOC 300 SEC 350 Being Gay: Coming Out In The 21st Century People come from shame to pride, which is a long process. In the 1940’s the military says that you are not criminals, you are just ill. As the wars ended, and they were getting rid of military men, they started weeding out the gays. Their rights were taken away, and they were not allowed back into the military. No one ever spoke the words “gay” or “lesbian”. In 1969 stonewall took place and police showed up at the bars where the gays hung out.
Should Gays in the Military be Prohibited? Gays should not be aloud in the military for numerous of reasons. Those reasons include it would lead to more outburst of HIV and Aids being in the military, mislead the trust on man has for another out there, and the last thing is the fact that girls and guys in the military are separated because of mental distractions. The first reason I will be talking about is the mental distraction part of this debate. The armed forces are a special case, putting their employees into life-or-death situations where any mental distraction could be fatal.
