Ironically, both men live for the hunt, but Zaroff bores himself with hunting animals. Zaroff believes in himself as a higher being with no compassion for lower human life. “The world is made up of two classes – the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are the hunters.” (7) Rainsford, once being the predator, becomes the prey and manages to survive for two days. On the third day, Rainsford is hunted by Zaroff’s hounds where he manages to kill Ivan (Zaroff’s slave), but plunges off a cliff to what Zaroff assumes to be his death.
His only chance for survival is to swim. Rainsford swims for what seems like an eternity and ends up at the shoreline of the island. He walks on the shoreline and later finds a place that looks like a mansion. There he meets the antagonist of the story General Zaroff who bought the island to hunt. Zaroff was a hunter as well but wants a different type of thrill that the big game animals no longer provided.

Byron Jackson Literary Essay #1 Outline Thesis: Although Rainsford, in “The Most Dangerous Game,” killed Zaroff in the end of the story, he will not become another human thirsty “Zaroff.” * In the beginning of the story Rainsford has a hardhearted attitude for the animals he hunts but this changes as he meets Zaroff and is no longer the predator but the prey. * No remorse from Rainsford is shown by the way he talks with his friend Whitney, on the ship, about hunting jaguar. (68) * Whitney did believe that jaguars could fear while Rainsfords argument was “Bah! They have no understanding.” * When Zaroff invites Rainsford in and tells him he hunts humans to fulfill his “addiction” to the hunt, Rainsford is bewildered and anguished. * When Zaroff says “Surely your experiences in the war—,” Rainsford does not even let him finish before saying “Did not make me condone cold-blooded murder.” * He continues to say “Thank you, I’m a hunter, not a murderer.” * Zaroff talks constantly about his hunts and how they bored him overtime.
Title and author of the work: "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell Brief summary of the work and importance of subject character–who is clearly named: Sanger Rainsford is a hunter who, because of an accident at sea, finds himself on Ship Trap island - an island feared by captains and their crews. He is an exceptional hunter who, it seems at first, has found a safe harbor in the island's only inhabitant's home, General Zaroff. Rainsford soon finds himself in a fight for survival against mother nature, General Zaroff, and even himself; the hunter becomes the hunted. There is a scene of when Rainsford and his crew are sailing and talking about things and then all of a sudden, they hit a rock that makes the boat begin to sink. The story becomes different right then and there. The water hits the hot boilers which then causes a dramatic explosion that makes a difference to the survivors. The boat sank in shark infested waters so it is a dangerous scene. Rainsford is the only one who remains and walks up to an island that he is very unaware that it is actually inhabited.
Based on Rainsford’s actions, thoughts, and the reaction of other characters, it is clear that he is an experienced hunter. First of all, Rainsford is very adventurous .In the beginning of the story. Rainsford and his friend Whitney are on a yacht that is sailing to the Amazon. They are planning to hunt jaguars as soon as they arrive, but then Rainsford falls overboard and they never reach their destination. This shows that Rainsford is willing to take on new challenges. Rainsford is also curious to find his location once he reached Ship Trap Island.Although he did not have much of a choice, he still wants and needs to figure out where he is .In addition, Zaroff states that he has read Rainsford’s book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet (pg.4). Exploring a strange location, hunting snow leopards a foreign country, and sailing to the Amazon to hunt jaguars easily shows Rainsford’s outgoing and adventurous personality.
