Determinate sentences involve sentences that have a fixed or flat time (Jirard, 2009). Determinate sentences play a large part in the increasing number of individuals in prison, which, as you can imagine, puts more strain on prisons financially. In the past two decades, we have become increasingly “tough on crime” which has helped to decrease crime to a certain extent. According to an article in the New York Times (2008), the US has fewer than five percent of the entire world’s population, but almost twenty five percent of the world’s prisoners (Liptak & , 2008). The author of the article goes on to say that people in the US are sentenced to do time for crimes that would not produce such a sentence in other countries.
Criminal justice agencies use electronic monitoring to keep track of offenders who are under house arrest, in pretrial release or on parole. Sometimes, electronic monitoring is used to monitor criminal’s movements within a prison or jail complex. Another use to electronic surveillance is monitoring sex offenders after they are release from prison. In July 2006 President Bush signed the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. The act empowers the Justice Department to receive funds in order to help state and local governments provide sex offenders with electronic surveillance units.

Checkpoint Jails and Prisons Response When you look at the prison system today there is a large amount of facilities out there used to house inmates. The facility that the offender is placed in is determined by what they have done wrong or the nature of the crime that they committed and their mental status. The common four prisons that will be talked about are the federal prisons, state prisons, private prisons, and county and local jails. One of the big differences in the private prisons is they have contracted out by the government to provide facilities that will be like the state and federal prisons. These private facilities can free up space in the government institutions to help prevent over-crowding.
Rick Holland American Corrections Phase 4 IP Professor Dawn Howell 12/15/14 “Objective jail classification (OJC) is a process of assessing every jail inmate's custody and program needs and is considered one of the most important management tools available to jail administrators and criminal justice system planners. An effective system of inmate classification will reduce escapes and escape attempts, suicides and suicide attempts, and inmate assaults.” (NICIN, 2006) Upon being convicted of a crime worthy of a prison sentence the convicted criminal are referred to a reception area for classification. This classification determines what facility and what level of confinement he or she will receive. In the State of California,” upon arrival to a prison Reception Center, the inmate must go through the reception and classification process. This could take up to 120 days.
The issue of prison conditions and the impacts they have on the future lives of inmates has attracted significant interest in the American society. One of the most important trends in the U.S justice system is that out of 600, 000 inmates that are released from prison each year, about two-thirds end up being rearrested after three years (Chen & Shapiro, 2007). In this respect, the objective of this paper is to discuss prison life and strategies that can be adopted in prisons to reduce recidivism. Analysis of the Purposes for Prisons in the U.S Justice System The correctional facilities in the U.S are principally meant to ensure that the sentences that have been prescribed by the Courts on offenders are implemented to the letter. Nevertheless, correctional administrators in the modern correctional facilities have been enlightened in that they recognize a broader responsibility and mission of prisons.
Historical Events that Framed Juvenile Justice System Name Class Date Professor Historical Events that Framed Juvenile Justice System The juvenile justice system developed out of the Progressive Era’s push for reform in every aspect of society but especially in how criminal offenders were housed and treated by the criminal justice system. Before the Progressive Era male, female, and juvenile offenders were housed in the same prisons and subject to inhumane conditions. Through the influence of the reformers the light of the prison inmate began to change and a new prison system emerged that separated men and women prisoners and most importantly established the juvenile justice system. The fact that juvenile crime was becoming a real problem in American society during the latter part of the 19th Century was another important factor in the decisions of reformers and the criminal justice system to develop a juvenile justice system that would respond to the needs of the juvenile instead of treating them like criminal offenders (Cox, 2007). During this era members in society began to recognize the developmental difference between the juvenile delinquent and the adult criminal offender.
Specifically it: Requires more juvenile offenders to be try in adult court Requires that certain juvenile offenders be held in local or state correctional facilities Changes the types of probation available for juvenile felons Reduces confidentiality protections for juvenile offenders Increases penalties for gang-related crimes and require convicted gang members to register with local law enforcement agencies Increases criminal penalties for certain serious and violent offenses (www.lao.ca.gov) Rehabilitation The juvenile criminal justice system for rehabilitation is a basic system that helps with education, schooling, and a job training; basically giving the juveniles a second chance on life. The Juvenile Justice System is intended to have goals for their public safety as well treatment in California. For a minor who is a juvenile victim is arrested than law enforcement
However, some experts believe the rates have declined because the baby boomer generations are aging, so the percentage of young adults has declined. Some believe that the tougher or harsher sentences for crimes are a cause and there is evidence of this based on the increased prison populations. According to "Where Have All The Burglars Gone?" (2013), "Could more criminals being locked up be the answer? The number of people behind bars has grown substantially in many countries over the past 20 years.” (para.
Over the course this study we will break down the different effects and try to figure out why our nation has increased prison inmates fourfold. One of the main phrases that is commonly used for the association of reintegration back into the free world is recidivism. Recidivism is the behavior that occurs when an ex-prisoner breaks the law again. There are many other problems and effects that lead to this behavior, some of the issues that they may go through are finding employment, reintegration, psychological effects and the effects of being institutionalized. One of the problems the prisoners face coming out of prison is finding employment.
