Abraham Lincoln once said, “I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me.” This quote suggests or can be interpreted as: that a person may perhaps do something illogical and unreasonable because of mixed feelings, jealousy, or insecurity and deeply regret it later on. I agree with Abraham Lincoln as his quote’s interpretations can be demonstrated throughout the events that partake in the novels A Separate Piece by John Knowles or the book The Time Machine by H.G. He saves her but she couldn’t speak in full sentences. Her name was Weena and he falls for her. The inventor soon discovers that the people are human cattle for monsters called Morlocks. The Morlocks captured several humans including Weena. When the inventor learns this he goes on a rampage and burns numerous Morlocks and saves Weena. The inventor had killed many Morlocks out of anger and fright. He really didn’t have to kill them, but he was angry at the Morlocks. Even after he saved Weena he set an explosion to kill all of the Morlocks. This proves Lincoln’s quote’s interpretation that when someone is angry they’re irrational and not themselves. Also, the bystanders that didn’t attempt to save Weena he slapped them. He slapped them even after realizing that they were stupid. He couldn’t control himself because of his anger. The author uses characterization to support the quotes interpretation. The inventor was a quiet hardworking guy, but at the end his mixed emotions of love and anger caused him to be brave and outspoken.
