Considering the research that was conducted, as well as Colvin’s own observations, he has come to the conclusion that greatness is available to everyone. He states that “Scientific experts are producing remarkably consistent findings across a wide array of fields” which is what leads him to believe that the research being done is accurate, providing his philosophy to be true. He also makes examples of people who are very elite in their field of expertise, such as Warren Buffett, the world’s premier investor, and explains that the reason for his success may be better associated with the hours he spends studying financial statements of potential investment targets, rather than a natural ability to succeed as a CEO, despite the fact that Buffett strongly believes that his success is due to an ability that he was simply born with. In the article Colvin also states that a critical factor in becoming great in nearly any field would be deliberate practice. But what is deliberate practice?

Despite Alan’s esteemed reputation for his clinical work, assuming this directors position is a huge change that Alan needs to greet with arms wide open. Though from a numbers standpoint, the practice seems to be fine, Alan needs to go against the “If it isn’t Broke, than don’t fix it” rule.

People who keep their mind set will improve their life and dredge all the errors out then start doing it again. Does it seem ultra altruistic and perhaps overly utopian? It must be the change needed in order to not just survive, but to

True success is attaining a balance between a fulfilling professional career, physical and emotional well-being, strong relationships with family and friends, and time carved out for community service in an area of my interest. Endicott College appears to be a perfect place for me to prepare to find that successful balance I am seeking.
The United States Marine Corps is one of the most admired institutions. In order to create a similarly high principled and respected organization, some of the principles of the organization, as enumerate by David H. Freedman, in his book, Corps Business: the 30 Management Principles of the US Marines is extremely instructive. According to Freedman, “…the Marine Corps is one of the most open-minded, innovative, knowledge oriented and in some ways freewheeling organizations in the world” (xviii) and it continues to be relevant and respected centuries after it was formed. By applying the principles followed by them, as distilled by Freedman in his study of the Marine Corps one can lead the Criminal Justice arena in a similar way and create an organization that fulfills its mandate effectively. Freedman identifies 30 principles, which he believes lie at the core of the success of the Marine Corps and I believe that some of these principles are aptly suited for the criminal justice organizations too.
