2nd Art Critique Assignment Sultan Ahmed Mosque 5/6/2014 Art Appreciation Sultan Ahmed Mosque Who is a Sultan Ahmed? He was the sultan of the Othman empire from 1603 until his death on 1617. Today a Sultan Ahmed is remembered by the great Mosque a Sultan Ahmed Mosque or it's called and also its known by the Blue Mosque because of blue tiles surrounding the walls of interior design. The Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 years and it's located in Istanbul. Sultan Ahmed intended to build this mosque when he was 19 years old and he died before it's been done at the age of 27, one year before the opening of the mosque. The Architecture of the Mosque, it’s a compensation of two centuries Ottoman mosque's and Byzantine church's developments. The mosque architecture is influenced by Hagia Sophia church and some of the classical Islamic architecture. Sultan Ahmed mosque is considered the largest mosque in the Othman period. The architect, Sultan Ahmed Mosque was the first mosques in Turkey that has six minarets. When the number of minarets was revealed, the Sultan was criticized for being presumptuous, since this was the same minarets number as at the mosque of the Ka'aba in Mecca He overcame this problem by ordering a seventh minaret to be built at the Mecca mosque. The minarets of the mosque are classical examples of Turkish architecture. The balconies are reached by spiral stairs. It is from these balconies that five times a day the believers were called to prayer at that time- in our day using loudspeakers. As we know that the minarets are useful tools not only a pleasurable architecture. It is used to direct people the location of mosque to come and pry, Sultan Ahmed Mosque minarets are very long it could be seen from faraway and also it could be seen from the see which travelers use to know that they are next to Istanbul.
