“A canary for one” by Ernest Hemingway The story under the title “A canary for one” was written by Ernest Hemingway, one of the most favorite American novelists, short-story writer and essayist, whose deceptively simple prose style has influenced wide range of writers. For a serious writer he achieved a rare cult-like popularity during his life time. His name is a token (symbol) of a literary success. And speaking about E. Hemingway and his works, it is worthwhile mentioning that some readers accept his writings like something written in “dark” colors. The style of E. Hemingway’s skill in narrative is perfect. His style is clear-cut and elegant. And the works of this author turned out to be the classics of the genre. So, “A canary for one” is the story with the quite simple plot of three people on a journey across Europe. The setting is a compartment of the train. A married couple shares a compartment with a woman who will be visiting her daughter. Though it seems quite a usual thing, lots of facts prove the story to be one of the great works of Hemingway’s genius. Analyzing this short-story, we can note, that the text begins with the definite article, which demonstrates the author’s desire to immediately immerse the reader in the text: “The train passed…” also we can see, that the author uses simile in the first sentence. He writes: “The train passed…” as if saying that life will rush like a train. At the beginning of the story appears a pleasant picturesque: “red stone house, a garden, thick palm trees, the sea…” which symbolics about very happy family house.
