There are no secrets to success; it is the result of preparation, determination, and hard work. This is a prevalent theme in Mary Lawson’s novels, Crow Lake and The Other Side of the Bridge, as it plays an integral role in the character and plot development of both books. Hence, Mary Lawson’s novels, Crow Lake and The Other Side of the Bridge, both exemplify the importance of maintaining realistic ambitions, demonstrating a good work ethic, and the willingness to make personal sacrifices in order to attain success.

  First of all, characters from both novels strive towards success, by setting realistic goals. Following his parents’ death, the most important thing on Luke’s mind is keeping his family together. He decides, “‘The four of us are staying here. I’m looking after you guys. … I can work nights’” (Lawson 73). This demonstrates Luke’s critical thinking abilities as he identifies the problem and finds a viable solution. Additionally, Kate follows her grandmother’s goal of attaining higher education. After spending much of her youth at the ponds with Matt, Kate develops a natural curiosity for learning, which propels her to define reaching higher education as success (Crow Lake). This represents Kate’s ability to understand her own definition of success, and make a realistic goal to achieve it. As in Crow Lake, characters from The Other Side of the Bridge also set realistic goals. Following the death of his father, Arthur needs financial resources to provide for his family. To generate the income required, Arthur plans to work on both his and the Luntz’s farm (The Other Side of the Bridge). This demonstrates Arthur’s ability to isolate and prioritize the issue at hand. Hence, as with Luke, Arthur also sets goals to support his family. Moreover, Ian finds it important to attain a career that will not only benefit others, but one that he will personally enjoy.
