Study Skills, Preparing for and Taking Tests There are many different ways to study for tests and quizzes. Knowing what study skills that fit the best you is what matters most. Studies have shown that students with better study habits tend to show higher test scores and grades. Taking steps to prepare for an exam, test, or quiz will help improve scores and overall will improve the skills needed for the future. Furthermore, without the right study skills and preparation needed the odds of success lower dramatically. Having adequate study skills can put you in the right direction to achieve academic success. Everyone is different, meaning different study skills, and working differently for students. To start off, it is best to study in timed segments. Don’t try to cram all of your studying in at once; it is best to take breaks in between. You may study for an hour and then take a ten to fifteen minute break or nap. Taking naps after learning something new helps the brain absorb the knowledge better than studying for hours at a time. “Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle” (Linksman, 2003). It is best to study one topic at a time and to review the notes and materials frequently throughout the week. Having a good place to study is crucial to the learning process. Find a place that is quite with little distraction and has sunlight or light to help focus on the material in front of you. I know that I like to study on my bed, but this is the wrong place for studying. It is so easy and tempting to lie down and fall asleep. When taking notes, it is best to review, highlight, and underline the most important one’s needed. Start by having a pen or pencil and a clean sheet of paper; that way the student can organize notes right from the start. By writing down the key points, this
