STUDY OF RELIGION - YEAR 12 Term 3 The movie "Life as a House" presents a touching 2001 American drama film which leaves the viewer contemplating the value of their own existence or purpose in life. In this essay the main character in the film, George Monroe, will be used as an example to help prove that a human's social and moral development along with their religious belief influences their purpose in life. Critical analysis of George's character in relation to religious teachings of Catholicism and Buddhism; and theories of human personal and moral development will be used to determine if this hypothesis is supported. The story line for “Life as a House” is based on the experiences of George Monroe, a middle aged divorcee who experiences a turn of events in his life which leave him terminally ill. This leaves George feeling confronted with the reality that his life until that moment has been worthless and that his existence would not be missed by anyone. He makes a decision that he will spend the small remainder of his life attempting to rebuild who he is as a person by finding a purpose in life which involves showing love to those around him and breaking down his past self. A strong theme in this movie is the meaning of life and the questioning of our own purpose here on Earth. It is because of this self-awareness that humans are so easily able to change their view on what is right and wrong. A good example of this is religion. Whilst it is unreasonable to think that all Catholics, Buddhists, or Atheists have the same views as their peers on the true purpose of life, what could be stated is that these religions or lack thereof provide a basis for the thought process involved in what we are supposed to do in our lives.
