Two Studies on Adolescents and Young Adults and How Marijuana Use Affects Their Sex Lives Whitney Pankey State University of New York at Westchester Community College Psychology 101 Spring, 2013 Marijuana is an illegal substance made from a plant, Cannabis. Marijuana is used as a psychoactive recreational drug. The main active ingredient in marijuana is called THC. When marijuana smoke is inhaled, THC moves from the lungs, to the bloodstream and is carried out to the brain and other organs in the body. The THC in the marijuana acts on specific receptors in the brain which starts a chain of cellular reactions and causes a person to become “high”. Marijuana has been known to be one of the most popular drugs in the United States of America. Many Young Adults have been warned about the use of marijuana. Common reasons why most young adults have been warned not to use marijuana are; marijuana impairs your judgment, memory and can affect your physical appearance. One specific point that is not commonly talked about is marijuana alters a lot of young adult’s better decision making during sexual activity, which can lead to risky sexual behavior. In the following studies it has been proven that young adults and adolescents under the influence of marijuana have been more likely to participate in risky sexual behavior. Studies of marijuana use propose that young adults and adolescents under the influence of marijuana at the time of sexual activity are less likely to use protection. This can lead to unintended pregnancies and the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases and/or infections. In research done by Bryan, Schmiege and Magnan (2012) “Latent Growth Curve Modeling” showed that larger doses of marijuana use at a criterion was the cause of a descending decline in the use of contraception over the two year period of the study.
