Stress Management Each day, for many of us, stress has a way of sneaking into our lives, often making us feel gloomy and miserable. Stress is generally considered to be any “physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental unrest and that may be a factor in disease causation (Stoppler).” The human body’s ability to react and adapt to stressful circumstances was designed as a means of protection and preservation. According to Mayo Clinic, the body is “hard-wired” in a manner that allows it to counter threats from unwanted invaders. However, when this natural “fight-or-flight” system is constantly alert and active, our health is put in jeopardy (Stress: Constant Stress Puts Your Health at Risk). Living in modern-day America is practically synonymous with maintaining a fast-paced and high-pressure routine. In fact, each of us are unquestionably presented with a number of demands each day, whether it is taking care of one’s family, paying bills, or simply preparing for an upcoming exam. Short-term, mild stress, on one hand, has been proven to be somewhat beneficial, as it often acts as motivation, driving us to focus and work efficiently. It is only when stress becomes chronic, overwhelming, and poorly managed, however, that its negative effects begin to appear (Stoppler). When stressful circumstances arise, the body subsequently perceives and treats these situations and daily hassles as threats, often resulting in the sense of being under constant attack. When such threats are encountered, the hypothalamus, a small region located at the base of the brain, triggers an “alarm” within the body. Through countless nerve and hormonal signals, this alarm then sparks the adrenal glands to release a rush of hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol.
