Tanika Marie Jones 10/01/2012 Writing Assignment #1 Stress: Methods of coping and handling Stress is a word that many people are all too familiar with. With the growing demand on the economy and job market, people are under more stress than ever before. When high levels of stress are not properly managed, health and psychological problems could very well start to develop and impact our lives in a negative way. However, there are many coping mechanisms that may reduce or eliminate stress levels and result in a positive outcome. For example, physical activities play a major role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Take time out for Yoga class or a walk with a friend to release pent-up stress and tension. Another technique would be to avoid hot-topics. If you get upset over religion or politics, cross them off your conversation list. Try to stay busy and develop a daily routine. Surround yourself with family and friends when you start to feel stressed. Think about all the good things you have in your life. In addition, try to avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs. Alcohol and drugs will only provide temporary relief from stressful situations. Instead, curl up with a good book and listen to some relaxing music. Aromatherapy and accupunture sometimes also serve as relaxing techniques for the mind and body. Managing or minimizing stress levels is all about taking control of your emotions, organizing a healthy daily schedule, and developing constructive ways to deal with life’s daily
