Discuss how the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards impact how you develop job descriptions. Provide specific examples to support your response. According to the Joint Commission website, “the Joint Commission standards are the basis of an objective evaluation process that can help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance” (Joint Commission). Many health care organizations are accredited through the Joint Commission from physician offices, hospitals to other types of. “The standards focus on important patient, individual or resident care and organize functions that are essential to providing safe, high quality care” (Joint Commission). If the Joint Commission has certain standards, then as the head of the human resources group, then when our organization hires individuals, we need to always take these standards into consideration. Not only must departmental objectives be met but also organizational objectives must be met; therefore, it is important to develop the job description in conjunction with the JCAHO standards. “A job description identifies the tasks, duties, and responsibilities in a job. It describes what is done, why it is done, where it is done, and briefly how it is done” (Flynn, Mathis & Jackson, 2011 p. 100). As the Vice President, I need to ensure that the job descriptions line up legally as well as meet the JCAHO standards. “In compliance with JCAHO standards, many healthcare organizations have adopted an approach of combining the job description with performance and competency assessment” (Flynn, Mathis & Jackson, 2011 p. 103). If you include all of the required information in a job description such as the title, summary, the duties and functions and the specifications, then a person will know exactly what they need to do and how they need to do it.
