STORIES ABOUT THE KINGDOM OF GOD JAMES MANKINS Grand Canyon University BIB123 New Testament History September 12, 2009 STORIES ABOUT THE KINGDOM OF GOD This is an essay about three stories from the bible and how they explain important features about the kingdom of God that Jesus was bringing to the Jewish people. The first story is about a woman who was caught in the act of adultery. According to the Law of Moses, this woman was expected to be executed by being stoned to death. The Roman Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking him what he thought should be done with her. In (John 8:7 NIV) Jesus asked them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” The older people being wiser left first and then everyone else until only Jesus and the woman was left. Jesus showed extended grace to this woman. This exemplifies God’s love for us. He is a forgiving God who will show mercy and forgive us of any sin we commit. Jesus expressed the truth to the woman when he told her to go and sin no more. Jesus message is simple and direct to the Jewish people. Nobody is sinless, we must learn to forgive one another, and if we do sin then we need to ask God for His forgiveness immediately while not commit the same sin again. The Parable of the Sower is the next story. Jesus used parables to illustrate stories because we are spiritually weak. He used the farmer to illustrate how when the farmer spreads his seed out over the field it doesn’t always land in fertile soil. Some of the seed fell on top of rock with very little soil and between thorns. The seed planted on rock came up fast but later died since it wasn’t planted in deep soil. Jesus teaches us that we must grow are roots deep into the word of God. We must read the bible, surround ourselves with Christian friends, and pray on a daily basis.
