After the first trimester of pregnancy the risk of congenital deformation drops to 2% (McCrary, ML, Severson, J, Tyring, SK 1999). The obstetrician would have recommended the immunoglobulin due to the fact that the pregnant woman had never developed the virus and so would not have been immune, as well as being in close contact with her infectious daughter. b) What are the risks to the baby if chickenpox is contracted during pregnancy? Chicken pox during pregnancy causes issues in 3 out of every 1,000 pregnancies (Ács, N, Bánhidy, FG Czeizel, AE 2010). If chickenpox is developed prior to 20 weeks, it is very difficult to treat and there is a larger chance that the newborn will suffer from Foetal Varicella Syndrome.
Abortion was legalized in 1973, and since then approximately one million and five hundred thousand babies have been aborted each year. Abortion in medical textbook is technically defined as the termination of a pregnancy in any way before the fetus has reached the stage of viability. Many of the women who had the abortion done were not told about the procedure or the risks involved, and not informed about the development of the baby that is inside of them. Nancy E. Meyers, a media relations director of the National Right to Life Committee, argues that abortion should be illegal. She goes on to say that 1.5 million abortions are done annually in the U.S., and she believes this number is much too high.
The majority of SIDS deaths transpire when an infant is between one month and one year of age (NICHD 1). In most cases, a parent goes in to check on their supposedly sleeping infant to find them not breathing. As tragic as it sounds, having an infant die as a result of SIDS devastates many families throughout the United States each year. While the amount of deaths has declined in recent years, about 2,500 infants die from SIDS each year (Children’s National Medical Center 1). In a 1969 conference, Bergman stated that SIDS did not depend on any "single characteristic that ordains an infant for death" (Guntheroth 2).
In this instance, a Cesarean section birth is made necessary. A Cesarean section, or C-section, birth is a surgical procedure where a baby is delivered by making an incision horizontally across the woman’s stomach and through her uterus. The reason why this type of delivery is restricted to emergencies is because it can have devastating lasting effects on the mother including infertility, death of the mother, and other severe risks. According to “Maternal Mortality and Severe Morbidity Associated with Low-Risk Planned Cesarean Delivery versus Planned Vaginal Delivery at Term,” there are many risks associated with C-section deliveries including hemorrhaging, uterine rupture, and a resulting hysterectomy (Liu et al. 2).
The Mysterious Tragedy of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is one of the biggest ways for an infant to die. It is not proven exactly what causes SIDS, but risk factors include alcohol, sleeping on their tummy, and maternal smoking. SIDS is an unexpected death of what seems to be a healthy infant, whose death continues to be unidentified even after the autopsy has been completed (Lerner, McClain, & Vance, 2002). Every year the number of infants who die of SIDS is higher compared to those who die of different conditions or diseases (Hauck, Horne, & Moon, 2007). An infant under the age of one is at risk of SIDS and it could affect the infant at anytime it does not discriminate, although there are many risk factors
abortions each year. That is more than twice of the amount of adoptions each year. Although many people think abortion maybe easier than adoption, they're wrong. Abortion isn't easier because you're killing an innocent baby's life and they're very many risks and dangerous effects that can happen. Medical complications include: heavy bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion, sepsis, anesthesia, damage to the cervix, scarring of the uterine lining, uterine perforation, damage to internal organs, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, and death.
I cannot not imagine what it is like to have a child that is sick, let alone a child that is terminally ill. Unfortunately, every year over a million infants and children suffer from a life-threatening illness. Families are then faced with the decision of what kind of medical treatment they want to obtain for their child. More commonly, families choose hospice care, which can be obtained in a hospital setting or at home. It might be more crucial for the child to receive hospice care at home, so the child may avoid from suffering from separation anxiety.
Running head: SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYDROME 1 SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYDROME Child Development Sudden Infant Death Syndrome 2 Abstract Sudden Infant Death is a Syndrome is a devastating that continues to plague many families. This short research paper will discuss SIDS, its incidence, prevalence, cause and prevention. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome 3 One of the leading causes of death in infant range from one month to a year is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). According to the National SIDS Resource Center, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as “the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a through case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history”. The term SIDS has been loosely used in the medical field; as propose by Beckwith “SIDS remains a diagnosis of exclusion”.
Children who have lost their mothers are 10 times more likely to die prematurely. Over 80 percent of maternal deaths are caused by hemorrhage, sepsis, unsafe abortions, and hypertensive disease. These deaths could have been prevented with adequate access to reproductive health services equipment supplies and skilled health care workers. (United Nations,
There has been approximately 2 billion a year being paid for emergency treatment for groups that are mostly made up of illegal immigrants. The biggest share of this would be women who show up in emergency rooms to deliver their babies. Emergency rooms are required to screen and stabilize patients no matter of citizen or insurance status. There are some that believe these services encourage the women to cross the border for care. Advocates for immigrants feel that the funding is not enough.
