Stereotyping in Schools: Text Books the Main Culprit

In today’s society I feel it is of the utmost importance that text books used in today’s education should show equality, be it with regard to racism, stereotyping or sexism. The text books should display good morals and teach the youth of today not to participate nor be encouraged to participate in socially unacceptable behaviors or ideas. According to the HSRC study on sexist and racist stereotypes in text books show that many text books do in fact have causes of racist or sexist stereotypes in many activities. It is important that learners receive the best education which would aid in the development of the child in a positive as well as teach children the acceptable behaviors, attitudes and values which would ensure the child grows up to be a moral adult in the future. There are many teaching aids and materials which assist in this, text books been one of them. However if a text book does in fact display stereotypes, this could lead to the child stereotyping in either a sexist or racist way. It is for this reason the teacher needs to take the responsibility of ensuring that while teaching or working on material, the learners are not encouraged to take part in sexism, racism or stereotyping in any way or form. I also feel that if text books do stereotype in any way, the teacher should make the learners aware of the dangers of stereotyping as well as the important to be tolerant of others who do stereotype in any way. The teacher should always be an example to his or her learners by acting in an appropriate manner, be it with learners, parents or educators. According to Google, racism is belief that ones race is more superior to that of another.
