Jerry Sandusky is still in court and is expected to get life in prison; he is being tried for 42 counts of child molestation. Joe Paterno never got in trouble with the law for this scandal but he did get fired as head coach of Penn State. Paterno’s legacy as one of the greatest coaches of all time was hit really hard with this. In a lot of people’s eyes, he didn’t do enough to help the children that were molested and I agree with that, but the problem that I do have is that he did do what he was supposed to do by reporting it to the Athletic Director. It’s a shame this happened to a great man like him.
Wrongful Convictions This article discusses the issue of wrongful convictions, and how many innocent people pay the price because the justice system has failed them. The article focuses on the case of Paul House, a man who was wrongfully convicted of murdering Carolyn Muncey. He spent twenty two years in a prison for a crime that he did not commit. His case “includes mishandled evidence, prosecutorial misconduct, bad science, cops with tunnel vision, DNA testing, the near-execution of an innocent man, and an appellate court reluctant to reopen old cases even in the face of new evidence that strongly suggests the jury got it wrong.” (Balko). In 1986, Paul House, was the prime suspect in the murder of Carolyn Muncey.

The American Prison System The fear of going to prison strikes fear in some and in others, it is an opportunity for rehabilitation and a chance to reflect. The magnitude of punishment is currently dependent on the location of the crime and trial as well as the prison where the offender is sent for their punishment. The privatization of the prison system and the lack of efficient and effective punishments through out the United State’s prison systems have left our prisons overpopulated, under funded and mismanaged. Creating standard guidelines throughout both public and private prisons, as well as making uniform punishments that fit their crimes, will make a transfer to a private prison no different than a stay in a publicly funded prison.
