DESIGN 1.0 Definition and function of mould Mould is a hollowed-out block that is filled with a liquid like plastic, glass, metal, or ceramic raw materials. As for plastic injection moulding, the mould is filled with plastic. The type of plastic used generally influenced by the product itself. Whether we want a high durability with high tensile strength product, or opt for low cost product with low tensile strength. The product itself depends on the manufacturer which normally looks on the demand of the product. 1.1 Function of mould I. Imparting the desired shape to the plasticised plastic II. Solidifying (cooling for the thermoplastics and heating for thermosets) the injected moulding part. 1.2 Basic of moulds A mould basically has two sets of components: I. The cavities and cores II. The base in which the cavities and cores are mounted. Apart from the sets of components, another criterion to be seriously taken into account is the number of plate. Either 2-plate mould or 3-plate mould. The difference between those two is the existence of stripper plate for 3-plate mould. 2.0 Mould Designer’s Chart Mould designer’s chart is a chart whereby it shows the brief steps on how to create a product, how to design the mould and the things need to be consider. As for this, the product is plastic hence; plastic injection moulding is chosen. This is basically the step to consider before starting to design the injection mould.
