Step outside Your World Analysis Martha Austin COMM/315 04/01/2013 Anne Bowers Step Outside Your World Analysis I chose to go in a wheel chair to an activity that would involve many different people and see what their reactions would be to a woman with a child in a wheelchair at one of these events. I chose to go to the Zoobalee with my grandson, for a couple of reasons actually. It gets him out around other children, he was able to chase after Easter Eggs, see all the zoo animals, and just have a good time in general. It also gave me a chance to see how others would react to me in a chair. Even though I did not stay in it all the time, during this time I had a chance to see how rude or considerate people can be. Actually, I saw two different kinds of responses. From the younger people looks said to me, “what are you doing here, and with a child? Where is the Childs parents, why are you not at home rather then here?” From the older people I saw compassion, concern, and things that showed me who had the consideration for others and who did not. Some got out of the way and allowed me to enter without any hindrance and others pushed their way through and left me to go in when we could after them. It was discouraging to see that the younger kids had not more concern then what they showed there to me. I found nothing surprising or unexpected. I have worked with people in wheelchairs since my mother was in one and I have seen how people can be. It is a shame that there are kids out there that have not been taught that it is something that happens to us all at one time or another and we have to live with it whether we are ready to or not. I was uncomfortable with this actually. I am not one that likes to show a weakness and I found that people looked at me as if I was very strange. Like I had no business out in public with a
