Status of LASER Land Leveling Services in the Punjab
I would like to share few facts about water scarcity in Pakistan particularly the Punjab province so that you may also contribute in our efforts to combat water shortages by introducing new interventions which are successful in other countries. I am confident that you may be having access to new technologies and gadgets appropriate in this regard.
Inadequate water availability is a major constraint in further expansion of the irrigated agriculture to enhance agricultural productivity of the country for meeting growing food and fiber demands. Horizontal as well as vertical expansion of agriculture is, therefore, urgently needed for the purpose.Increasing water shortages have compelled the all concerned for developing strategies for efficient utilization of available water resources. Enhancement of water productivity at farm level is the most appropriate solution to redress water scarcity. LASER land leveling is the best option for improving water productivity through minimizing water application losses. It is, accordingly, neededto accelerate the adoption of this technology throughstrengthening LASER land leveling services in the private sector.
The LASER technology has proved to be a highly efficient tool for achieving a high degree of precision for carrying out precision land leveling (PLL) operations in much lesser time. The existing LASER controlled land leveling system consists of a LASER transmitter, a signal receiver, an electrical control panel, and a solenoid hydraulic control valvethat raises or lowers the leveling blade. Use of LASER technology in the precision land leveling was introduced in the Punjab during 1985 through on farm water management (OFWM) program. The same has been proved to be highly beneficial because it minimizes the cost of operation, ensures better degree of accuracy in much lesser time, saves irrigation water, ascertains uniform seed germination, increases fertilizer use...
