For this week Web Quest, I will discuss two artworks from two different artists, Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch. The first artwork is Starry Night over the Rhone by Vincent van Gogh. This painting was painted in September 1888, and is one of his most famous paintings of Arles at night. Starry Night Over the Rhone is the painting that is said to have given Vincent the perspective that he employed in his later Starry Night painting. This painting is differenced from Starry Night because it contains human beings. The painting shows a starry night over a section of Rhone River at night. It captures the gas lighting in Arles at night and an illuminated sky. On the foreground there are two individuals walking along the river. The stars in the night are surrounded by an orb of their natural light. Vincent gave equal visual weight to all the things that he painted in Starry Night Over the Rhone. Second painting is The Scream by Edward Munch. It was painted in 1893, showing an agonized figure against a red sky. The Scream is thought of as the first expressionist painting. Munch’s painting does not show a realistic visual interpretation of reality; it is an abstract image, based on his inner feelings, and attempts to convey his most intimate and terrifying feelings and emotions. In his own diary in January 1892, he stated “I was walking along the road with two friends…Suddenly the sky turned blood-red. I stopped, and leaned against the railing, deathly tired…I stood there, trembling with fear. And I sensed a great, infinite scream pass through nature.” What would be a beautiful sunset but it transformed into an expression of fear, and anguish. Munch is said to have
