Novels are written on a regular basis and with each new book the audience expects a new story that he or she may relate too. These books are written throughout the ages with different stories, plots and, themes but when the reader finishes them, they still resemble books previously written. There are books seldom written that are an original thought. I enjoy science fiction novels and even these novels are rarely new ideas. Like for example compare the famous Star Wars series and the Inheritance series about Eragon Shadeslayer. Star Wars and Eragon were written in two different time frames but, have the exact same plot, character development and, antagonist throughout their series’. Eragon started as a farmer in the small town called Carver Hall. The heroes of the time were also thought to be dead. Instead of Jedi heroes they were called Dragon Riders. Eragon found a dragon egg and it hatch making him the next Dragon Rider of the age. The Dragon Riders were thought to be gone but Eragon found one whose dragon has died. Bramn then becomes his first trainer until his death early in the series. After Bramn dies Eragon is without a trainer until Aromas the Elf notifies him to seek him out. His second master was a dragon Rider who all thought was dead. He was hiding in case a new rider appears needing training. Aromas trained Eragon until his early death leaving Eragon like Luke without a master or mentor to continue his training. Both characters had two mentors who died without finishing their training. His father turned out to be alive and he was the one who turned to the dark side. Luke’s father was then the apprentice of the Emperor of the Galactic Empire. The Emperor was the most powerful user of the force. The force was a type of magical energy that let force sensitive people use its power. While battling Emperor in the end Luke was able to convince his father to join the Jedi again and help defeat the Emperor. This also is how the Inheritance series ends. Eragon was raised by his uncle also not knowing who his family was. After Bramn dies in the story Eragon’s friend Murtagh is kidnapped and taken to the evil King Galbatorix. The king forces Murtagh into servitude. The King then finds out that Murtagh is Eragon’s brother. Murtagh and Eragon were both shocked by this revelation. Later in the story Eragon then finds out that his father was a Dragon Rider and it was Bramn. Murtagh was a son of one of the Dragon Riders who turned evil with King Galbatorix. This made them half-brothers. The apprentices of the antagonist were both family members of some sort. When Eragon turns to face the King he is only able to defeat him because of the help from Murtagh. He turned his brother to the good side like Luke Skywalker did in the Star Wars series. Similarities continue to appear throughout the story making the stories
