Staphylococcus is a group of bacteria that can cause multiple different diseases. Staphylococcus is widely known as Staph (pronounced “staff”) and can infect various tissues of the body. The infection can cause disease due to direct infection or due to the production of toxins by the bacteria. Examples of the diseases are boils, impetigo, food poisoning, cellulitis, and toxic shock syndrome. The name Staphylococcus comes from Greek origin, the word staphyle, meaning a bunch of grapes, and kokkos, meaning berry. The reason for this origin is that under a microscope the Staphylococcus infection looks similar to a bunch of grapes or small round shaped berries. There are different strains of the bacteria as well, such as MRSA or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to the antibiotic methicillin. There are over 40 different types of the Staphylococci bacteria that can infect human beings, but most of the infections are cause by Staphylococcus aureus. The Staphylococcus bacteria can reside on unwashed hands, human nose, and human skin, as well as on kitchen utensils, and kitchen tools such as can openers. Improper sterilization and cleanliness issues can contribute to the Staphylococcus bacteria’s spread within environments that process food, such as a kitchen or restaurant. When the Staphylococcus bacteria resides in the human nose or skin there are no symptoms or reactions to the bacteria, but weakening of the skin or punctures from metallic objects such as catheters or metal can lids can cause the bacteria to infect other regions of the
