Standing Woman I chose the sculpture titled “Standing Woman I” 1960 by Alberto Giacometti. I found this sculpture on display at the Getty Museum in West Los Angeles. I enjoy going to the Getty to wander through all the visual magic that is displayed throughout the museum. I find new things jumping out and on this visit the “Standing Woman” did just that. She was located in the foyer at the west of the museum’s main entrance standing isolated, but not lost. When I saw her, she drew me into her. I think it was the contrast of her slender lines and her towering size that intrigued me initially, but as I got closer I found her to lend so much more. Her composition composed of a bronze casting that danced with movement and unlimited visual expression that causes you to become entranced in her image. The surface texture seemed to never end which made you wonder the story behind her creation. Alberto Giacometti, a Swiss born artist that lived from 1901- 1966, created her. He is best known for his paintings, drawing and sculptures that originally consisted of an abstract style but by the 1930’s he stared to place an emphasis on finding reality in his works. This real life approach developed into what he became well known for and sought after by many. This style of skeletal design in this sculptural figure created a symmetrical image of balance with a stretched accentuation of her physical form. She represents a depiction of women that Alberto remembered from his past of the post war era of Europe. Alberto was often found walking the streets of Paris late at night enjoying the events of the evening. During a stroll down the boulevard known as Saint-Michel, he sees his friend a young English woman named “Isabella Nicholas” off in the distance.
