Standards In Education

Standards play a very important role in education, in my opinion. Standards are what students are expected to learn in each grade and subject. Every state Department of Education creates standards that are for schools within that particular state. Standards are the basis for the way teachers are trained and what they teach. Without standards, districts and schools would not have goals to follow for each grade. Exams that are given by the state can measure the progress of students towards attaining the standards. Although I believe that standards are important throughout education, critics argue that “having rigid standards and tests discourages schools from being innovative and inspiring creativity in their students”. I disagree with this statement because if there were no such thing as standards, every school throughout the world would be on different levels. Gene Wilhoit, an executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers said “ Many states have too many expectations in their academic standards that force teachers to cover too much in a superficial way”. I also disagree with his statement because if a teacher has the right skills and knowledge, they can be creative in their teaching by finding a way in which they can cover every expectation without it being too much information on the students. There are many great benefits of standards. One of these benefits is focus. Following a set of standards allow the teacher and the students to focus on a variety of different topics. There is a certain amount of material that needs to be taught in order to for the students to move on to the next grade level. Therefore, it is the teacher’s duty to adapt teacher methods and focus on creating different activities/ lesson plans that will follow the standards of that grade
