Persuasive Outline Topic: Stand Your Ground Laws General Purpose: To Persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience the importance of Stand Your Ground Laws in the United States and why it shouldn’t be repealed. I. Introduction A. Attention Step: The United States, a place where people die everyday, some due to natural causes and many due to homicides. Our homicide rates are rising every single year because of one reason, murders. But not all of these murders are considered injustice. B. Thesis: The Stand Your Ground law allows a person to use deadly force if necessary in order to defend themselves or others without having to retreat when faced with a reasonable perceived threat. C. Significance: According to the US News, July 18th, 2013, more than half of the states in the country have some form of legislature that justifies the stand your ground law. D. Preview: First we will look at the legal background to the Stand Your Ground law, second, we will explore the cause and effects; and finally, we will discuss what kind of impact the government both at the federal and state level can have on this law. In the wake of a very controversial case in Florida surrounding “stand your ground” laws, many have made a public outcry demanding to repeal the law completely. B. Repealing the law completely would severely affect citizens of this country. 1. Richard Morthland, member of the Illinois House of Representatives, stated “If states begin to repeal ‘concealed carry” and ‘stand your ground’ laws because of the Florida incident, who will become safer?
