Current Issues Summary and Response Matt 12/12/2010 Intro As a future special education teacher one of my jobs will be to keep up-to-date on current issues in the education field and let my parents know about any helpful development on these current issues. It is important for teachers to keep tabs on new developments that could be useful to better their understanding of education as a whole. There are a plethora of current issues involving special education. These issues range from more controversial to less controversial. Some of the more controversial issues are the use of tests to place students into special education, how should we grade students with special needs and how to discipline a student who is in special education.
Culturally Competent Consultation in Schools focuses on consultation between school personnel and parents. It explains how imperative it is for school psychologists and other personnel to become actively engaged in in culturally competent practices. It continues to explain that all school personnel should continue to examine and increase their cultural competence so that their efforts meet the needs of every student. We have to be able to share our experiences and mistakes so as we can learn from each other. To be able to care for the child we must not only build a relationship with them but also with their parents / carers and others in their family, we have to be able to maintain this relationship as well, this can be done daily by simple gestures such as waving hand for hello or goodbye, listening and taking interest in what the child or others have to say. Through communication we are able to reassure and comfort each other, express what our needs are and help others with their needs, guide each other and try to help resolve conflicts or disagreements. Through communication we can show our love for one another. 2.
Tassoni. P (2007) says that “we need to work as part of a team to provide a quality service for children and their parents”. We also need to work with the parents and show respect towards them and encourage parent’s involvement within the setting. Tassoni says that “early years setting will have a management structure which should clarify practitioner’s responsibilities”. A responsibility practitioners have is to make sure the health of the child is paramount this could be by preventing hazards and carrying out risk assessments and safety checks.
I would want to have done the same things once I have my own classroom and I feel fairly passionate for students to understand and develop tolerance towards people who may be different than themselves. I feel that as teachers, we can take action to really mold our students to grow and be better individuals living in this world. I really do believe that issues in the matter of race/ethnicity and culture has to do with educating oneself of these things and practicing the basic matters a person should carry with themselves. I really think that these issues need to be discussed in depth when students are young and continuously because it is harder for one’s mind to see the wrong in something they believed was right for most of their
Values are what you want and need to achieve the goals you set for yourself and your family. Values can be obtained in many different ways. The most important piece for building values is your family. I am responsible as a mother for teaching my children what is right or wrong before, any other influence reaches them. I can only wish that what I have already instilled in my two children is a reflection of myself as a parent.
As working with children will not be easy in aspects of planning, teaching etc. it is important that you commit some valuable time to plan your lessons and spend your time wisely with children to help them learn. An example of this is preparing work for children of different abilities as they have different learning methods and some may take more time or require extra support due to learning difficulties etc. It is relevant for an early years practitioner to work well in a team as it is important to acknowledge everybody's contribution which is their right. You should adopt a ‘we’re in this together’ approach.You should also be aware of how to behave within your team and be supportive and co - operative.
EYMP 1 Task 2 3.1 As a trainee practitioner i need to show the knowledge and understanding of how partnership with parents is important to the success of each individual child in the setting. Promoting an effective bond between the parents and professionals, this provides a source of strength throughout their time in the setting. Consequently practitioners should be very aware that there leading role is very different in the Childs life, compared to their own parents, carers etc. Practitioners roll is to be able to show a more compassionate bond with the child. Although we, as teachers, may use developmentally appropriate practices to teach wellness concepts to the pre-school children in our care, if there is not a follow-through at home it will be hard for the child to continue these habits. Nevertheless, we still need to try to implement these wellness concepts into our everyday teaching with the hopes that they will sink in. Our book tells us, “Children have their own way of learning. I agree with Lickona (2009) when he said that “family lays the Foundation”. In order for schools to be successful in teaching character education there needs to be open communication between parents and educators. Lickona (2009) also stated that “schools build on the foundation”. Parents need to be informed and involved with the character education curriculum the school is implementing. Kohn (1997) changed my opinion on how to teach character education.
