However, studies have proven that with the use of prophylactic antibiotics, this complication is reduced. Cesarean deliveries are one area where the use of prophylactic antibiotics can make a significant impact. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), cesarean delivery rates are at an all-time high with almost one-third of all deliveries occurring through cesarean. With the increasing number of cesarean deliveries and the significant risk of surgical site infections, the use of antibiotic prophylactics should be utilized with all cesarean deliveries. In a study performed by Carol Killian, Eileen Graffunder, Timothy Vinciguerra, and Richard Venezia for the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology, the authors attempted to identify risk factors that were associated with surgical site infections after cesarean deliveries. Their study concluded that the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in all cases of cesarean deliveries would benefit all patients by reducing the frequency of surgical site infections. The research in this paper included a study that followed each cesarean delivery conducted by the Albany Medical Center for a six-month period. This study followed each of those patients for 30 days post-procedure and reported on the number of surgical site infections incurred. The results showed "a significantly lower overall SSI rate of 5.9% was identified in patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis, compared to 12.7% among patients not receiving antibiotic prophylaxis" (Killian et al. 615). By reducing the number of surgical site infections, hospitals can reduce the length of stays by patients who have cesarean births.
