Kendrick Watts Moyer English 1020- 026 10 February 2014 Is College Really for Me…?? In the essay “Is College for Everyone” by Pharinet, discusses that it’s not mandatory to attend a college institution to obtain a well-paying job. In the beginning of the essay Pharient refrains to a statement that students hear every day, “You want get anywhere without your education (635).” This is a statement that many teachers and parents repeatedly preach to their child since they were kindergartener’s. Pharinet also explains in a reasonable tone, that having a college degree doesn’t always bring success in most students’ life. Mainly because, students are not properly preparing themselves to what seems to be the “real world”.
Taking Responsibility For Education Students rely on a number of things in their pursuit of a higher education; teachers, accredited institutions, and textbooks containing correct information. James Loewen, who wrote Lies My Teacher Told Me, brings up concerns for students stating US History lower-learning textbooks are not equipped with factual information. In Loewen’s text he brings to light some very significant US events he believes are not factual. When we think of studying history we think about learning specific dates, events, or wars that impacted our country. Not many people stop to question if the information they are reading or being taught is factual.
However, when Jamal had to turn in an assignment for a competition at school, he couldn’t resist the temptation. The first paragraph of his essay was written by Forrester. Little did Jamal know, Forrester’s borrowed first paragraph had already been published. Jamal’s teacher, Crawford, was already upset with Jamal for being such an excellent writer. When he caught him plagiarizing, it was to Jamal’s demise.
The main problem with the evaluation tools and techniques when encountering the company issues was hard to determine. The group found many options could have been more urgent than others; it was necessary to really prioritize and stay focus on our main goal. When there is a short-term and long-term goal in mind, people can organize all options and determine which ones will get to the goal faster and easier. The stimulation was amazing because it allowed us to see how a decision could affect the company and what would be the best decision for the future. The review by Linda, the CEO was the final decision and though it wasn’t real, our decisions mattered and stimulated real company business in the management
I was not surprised, but very disappointed when I received notification of my Academic Probation. I met with the Dean and explained the situation to him as well. My first year at the University of Richmond proved to be a very difficult experience for me and my grades suffered as a result. I am certainly not attempting to make excuses for my poor academic performance, but would like to explain the circumstances. As a freshman, I understood that the rigors of taking 18hrs credit hours of class work would be challenging.
Going to class without a book is a gigantic problem. Why go to class without a book? Would you go to work with the proper attire on? Statistics show that students who do not have the required materials, such as a book, are most likely to fail the course. The reasons some students do not have a book for class for a lack of funds, transportation, and motivation.
I tried to keep focus but my solitude was starting to become unbearable. Yes there were many students around but they all seemed to have their own network since they knew their classmates from their previous schools while all of my friends were in regular ed classes. I started to rebel and slacked off so much that teachers began to wonder why i was in a advanced class since they thought i couldn't hack their work load when in reality all i wanted to do was be placed in regular ed just to be with my friends. Odd and dumb reason, i know but I didn't know that at the time. Eventually I was moved from classes due to my insubordination and i was content at the time.
Personal Reflection Paper In my first discussion question that I answered for this course I said that the difference between thinking and critical thinking was the way that we act upon a thought. I also said that a critical thinker will ask more questions to have a better idea about a particular issue. According to Elder (2009), “It is the art of analyzing and evaluating with the goal of improving thought.” (p.9). During this course I have learned many interesting subjects in relation to critical thinking, but there are three that I found to be most significant. The first one is that individuality means more than claiming independence, it means achieving it by acknowledging the influences that have shaped my thinking, by sorting and evaluating my ideas and attitudes, and finally by choosing the best ideas by resisting the pressure of habit and by changing the ways that I think because the evidence tells me to do so.
I knew that the teacher would tell me what I needed to know for a test. There was no instruction to teach organizational skills and I had no clue how to take notes or study. Going into college was like being thrown into the deep end of a pool and not knowing how to swim. Learning all of the necessary skills such as time management, organization, and studying creates worries which lead to stress. Time management is an essential skill if you want to be successful in college.
As well as “The making new friends” challenge. I mean why bother making new friends if you are going to lose them each year? But in the other hand, you should expect (and accept) the diversity of people. What to expect from college is not really something to specific. For example, many of us weren’t really use to studying during high school, mainly because it was so unchallenging.
