There are many opinions about how the earth was created. Everything from a great cataclysmic explosion (the Big Bang Theory), to some saying God started the process and the universe evolved over billions of years. The Bible tells us “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1 NIV). The first two chapters show that the world was created by God, by his choice, not as a necessity, but as an expression of his love. We learn through this that God is creative, that he is its creator, making him distinct from it and because of that he is in control. In six days God formed and filled the earth. He formed its shape, giving light and darkness, separation of sky and earth, the separation of land and water. Then he proceeds to fill it with living things (Gen 1-2:3). These accomplishments are indisputable as they still exist today. In Gen 2:4 – 5:32, we move on to the human identity. Man was, like the earth and heavens, created by God as noted in Gen 1:26 “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground”(NIV)and in Gen 2:7 “ The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being”(NIV). Adam and Eve, our first ancestors, were the highlight of God’s creation. God loved us above all other things. Man was given charge over God’s creation. This not only shows that He loved us, but also that he trusted us by delegating some of His reigning authority to us to name and care for His creations. The Lord God said” It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (Gen 2:18 NIV). This was to become the first human relationship, given by God, for man.
