Sports are of Less Value to Society Than Science? My aunt who worked for the MSF told me an interesting experience she had when she was in Africa. One day morning, she woke up earlier than usual to do jogging. She got changed and put on her running shoes. Running for about two or three minutes, she discovered a young local man had been following her at the back. She stopped and asked, “Young man, why are you following me?” He answered, “My lady, I saw you escaping from your house and running away, are we in danger? I thought we were fleeing!” Nowadays, in the modern world, sports are considered as a kind of recreation. Comparing with the contribution of science to society, sports seem to have a lower status and with less significance.When this question comes to my mind, my first response is “Isn’t it obvious?” Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.Because of the advance in science and different technologies, our quality of life is improved. Knowledge builds the world we are living. And science is the way we build knowledge. And for sports? Basically, we call it a kind of recreation. In a broader sense, sport is generally recognised as activities which are based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity, with the largest major competitions such as the Olympic Games admitting only sports meeting this definition. A wide range of sports were already established by the time of Ancient Greece and the military culture and the development of sports in Greece influenced one another considerably. Science v.s.
